Book Cover Redesign

Personal Project

Designer, Photographer, Editor

I wanted to reimagine the book cover for "I Want to Die but I

Want to Eat Tteokbokki" using a real person instead of the

illustrated original. I wanted to incorporate Korean elements to

reflect the setting and highlight the cultural context of mental

health struggles in Korea.

Design Process

I photographed and edited a model to visually express both the

heaviness of depression and the desire to keep living, creating a

cover that balanced vulnerability with resilience. To add irony

and emphasize the character’s eventual happiness, I chose a

brighter, more cheerful aesthetic while still keeping the

emotional undertones present. The final design integrated

Korean text alongside the imagery, tying the cover to its cultural

roots while offering a fresh, humanized interpretation of the

story.
